Longines DolceVita

Since 1997 · 29 years to 2026 · First made in Saint-Imier, Switzerland

Swiss rectangular dress watch inspired by 1920s elegance, continuously refined.

The Longines DolceVita is a rectangular dress watch that has remained in continuous production since 1997, representing one of the brand's most enduring design statements. Inspired by the relaxed glamour of Italian dolce vita culture and modelled after a 1920s Longines timepiece, the collection embodies what the Swiss manufacturer calls 'elegance as an attitude'—a philosophy that has guided the brand's identity for nearly three decades.

The watch's defining characteristic is its rectangular case with softened angles and rounded frame, available across multiple sizes from 20.80 × 32mm to 28.20 × 47mm. This proportional harmony allows the design to function equally as a refined dress piece and as jewellery-like accessory. The case construction combines stainless steel with optional rose or yellow gold, while dial options range from white with Arabic numerals to silvered 'flinqué' finishes with blue Roman numerals, and mother-of-pearl variants set with diamonds. The curved sapphire crystal follows vintage contours, and all models feature water resistance to 30 metres. Movements vary by size: smaller women's models typically employ the calibre L176 quartz movement, while larger men's cases can accommodate the L592 mechanical self-winding calibre, which beats at 4Hz and delivers 40 hours of power reserve.

Produced entirely in-house by Longines, the DolceVita has evolved from its initial positioning as a women's watch into a collection serving both genders and multiple collecting sensibilities. The 2015 redesign introduced interchangeable bracelets—a significant modernisation that acknowledged contemporary preferences for personalisation without abandoning the collection's core aesthetic. A 2022 collaboration with luxury leather brand YVY produced a distinctive double-strap variant inspired by the brand's equestrian heritage, demonstrating the design's capacity for reinterpretation.

The DolceVita's longevity reflects its position at the intersection of accessible luxury and serious watchmaking heritage. At retail prices ranging from approximately £800 to £1,900 for standard models, it occupies a market segment where Swiss legitimacy and in-house production remain relatively uncommon. The collection's appeal transcends generational and lifestyle boundaries, functioning simultaneously as an entry point for new collectors and as a refined alternative to sports watches for established enthusiasts. Its rectangular form, rarely encountered in contemporary watchmaking, provides visual distinction while its heritage connection to 1920s design offers historical grounding that justifies its continued presence in Longines' catalogue.
