Rega Planar 1
Since 1977 · 49 years to 2026 · First made in Southend-on-Sea, Essex
The Rega Planar 1 is a manual belt-drive turntable designed as the entry point to vinyl playback for listeners new to the medium, returning after years away, or building a secondary system. Manufactured continuously since 1975 under the Planar name, it represents the most accessible expression of Rega's founding principle: that every component in the signal path should be as lightweight and rigid as possible, storing and releasing minimal energy back into the music. The result is a turntable that performs without the coloration typical of budget equipment.
The current Planar 1 arrives fully assembled and aligned, requiring only the balance weight to be attached before play. Its RB110 tonearm uses ultra-low-friction bearings with factory-preset bias, eliminating setup complexity and user error. The Rega Carbon moving magnet cartridge—a genuine elliptical-stylus design rather than a compromise component—is factory-fitted. The 23mm phenolic resin platter provides flywheel stability, while the brass central bearing is machined to tolerances that competitors at the price cannot match. At 4.2 kilograms, the turntable is deliberately light; the motor cover includes integrated cooling, and the foot assembly isolates vibration from the supporting surface.
Hand-assembled in Southend-on-Sea, the Planar 1 has won What Hi-Fi's Best Turntable award for five consecutive years, a recognition that reflects both its sonic performance and its role in the vinyl revival of the past two decades. Available in matte black, matte white, and walnut effect finishes—the latter supplied with a smoked dust cover—it is a finished object that integrates into serious audio systems without apology. The turntable carries a lifetime limited warranty, a statement of manufacturing confidence rare at any price point. Since its introduction in its current form, the Planar 1 has become the benchmark against which affordable turntables are measured, a position earned through consistent engineering rather than marketing.
Timeline
- 1977 First made · Disputed Rega Planar 1 enters production in Southend-on-Sea, Essex.
- 2006 Resumed The Wikipedia Rega Planar 3 article states that 'the P3 became Rega's entry-level turntable until the company relaunched the P1 in 2006,' clearly implying the P1 had been discontinued for a period before 2006. The start date of the discontinuation is not given in any source, so from_year is null. The Upscale Audio snippet also references a discontinued version of the Planar 1 with Carbon Cartridge, corroborating that at least one generation was pulled from production.
