Carhartt B01
Since 1939 · 87 years to 2026 · First made in Detroit, Michigan
The Carhartt B01 is a work dungaree that emerged from the American industrial economy of the 1930s and has remained functionally and materially unchanged for more than eighty years. Designed as a loose-fit pant for manual labourers, it represents a category of object that prioritises durability and repairability over novelty. The B01 is constructed from 12-ounce firm-hand cotton ringspun duck canvas, a heavyweight fabric that breaks in over time rather than degrading, developing a custom fit through use rather than losing structural integrity. The design incorporates double-layer knees with openings for removable knee pads, heavy-hauling reinforced back pockets, multiple tool pockets, and a left-leg hammer loop—features that address the practical needs of tradespeople rather than aesthetic preferences.
The manufacturing process itself has become part of the product's identity. Each pair passes through 61 pairs of hands that cut, sew, hem, and triple-stitch the 28 pieces forming the garment. This labour-intensive approach, maintained since 1939, stands in contrast to contemporary fast-fashion production and reflects a philosophy in which durability justifies cost. The high-rise fit sits slightly above the waist with a generous cut through the seat and thigh, designed to accommodate layering in cold weather and to fit comfortably over work boots—practical considerations that have not changed because the working conditions they address have not fundamentally changed.
The B01's cultural persistence lies in its refusal to become obsolete. It has been worn continuously by construction workers, farmers, and tradespeople across North America and beyond, accumulating a reputation through use rather than marketing. The pants are designed to be repaired rather than discarded; the reinforced seams and accessible construction allow worn sections to be replaced. This repairability has extended the working life of individual garments and, by extension, the relevance of the product itself. The emergence of Carhartt Reworked, the company's resale and refurbishment programme, formalises what has always been implicit in the B01's design: that these pants are meant to circulate through multiple owners and decades of labour before reaching the end of their useful life.
