United States Playing Card Company

Bicycle Playing Cards

Since 1885 · 141 years to 2026 · First made in Cincinnati, Ohio

The world's bestselling playing cards, continuously manufactured since 1885.

Bicycle playing cards represent the longest continuously produced commercial card brand in the world. First manufactured in 1885 by the United States Printing Company, they emerged from a Cincinnati printing firm that had already established itself in the card trade. The brand name itself references the bicycle craze sweeping America in the 1880s, and the iconic back design—featuring a cherub in mirror image riding a bicycle, framed by Florentine decorations—became the visual signature of the product. This "Rider Back" design, registered as No. 63, remains the most recognizable card back in production today.

The standard Bicycle deck follows the French pattern: 52 cards in four suits, two jokers, and two advertising cards. The Bicycle trademark appears on the ace of spades. The cards are manufactured with a textured "air cushion" finish that improves handling and durability, a technical refinement that has been maintained across production eras. Available in both poker and bridge widths, Bicycle cards have been produced in numerous back designs and colors, though the red and blue Rider Back variants dominate sales. The brand's consistency in materials, finish, and design has made it the default choice for casinos, magicians, cardists, and casual players alike.

Bicycle cards have embedded themselves in American institutional and domestic life. The company notes that its cards have "paved the path to freedom for POWs in World War II and kept presidents entertained in the oval office." More broadly, they function as a neutral standard—the card deck most people encounter first, the one assumed when no specification is given. This ubiquity is not accidental but the result of consistent quality control, reliable distribution, and a design that has proven neither dated nor trendy. The product's longevity reflects not innovation but the opposite: a refusal to alter what works. Bicycle cards remain the bestselling playing card brand in the world, found in casinos and kitchens across generations.
