Peugeot Pepper Mill
Since 1874 · 152 years to 2026 · First made in Doubs, France
The Peugeot pepper mill represents an unusual continuity in industrial production: a kitchen tool designed in 1874 that remains functionally and materially unchanged, still manufactured by the same family enterprise in the same region of France. The Z model, the first Peugeot pepper mill, emerged from the company's transition from flour milling to steel production. The Peugeot brothers' expertise in metal work and mechanical precision, developed through manufacturing watch springs and saw blades, translated directly into the design of a grinder capable of consistent, reliable performance—a quality that has defined the brand across generations.
The mills are constructed from wood—typically beech—turned and finished by hand, combined with precisely stamped metal mechanisms assembled with what the company describes as 'goldsmith's skill'. Early versions were produced in white china, silver-plated metal, and bakelite; the material palette expanded over time to include various woods and finishes. The Paris model, introduced in 1987, became the company's signature product and is now available in sizes ranging from 10 to 110 centimetres, in natural wood, lacquered finishes, and multiple colours. The design philosophy has remained consistent: a tapered cylindrical form with a wooden body and metal grinding mechanism, operated by hand or, in the electric LAVAL model, by battery power.
The cultural life of the Peugeot mill extends beyond its function. A documented anecdote from the 1930s recounts Jean Pierre Peugeot visiting American car factories; at a banquet, when told everything in the room was American, he picked up the pepper mill on the table and replied, 'Almost everything—except for this, which is French, and PEUGEOT too.' The mills have been exported to more than 80 countries, establishing themselves as markers of French domestic craft and reliability. Their longevity as a product reflects both the soundness of the original mechanical design and the company's commitment to maintaining production standards in an era of industrial consolidation and outsourcing. The mills remain manufactured in the Doubs, where design, development, and assembly continue to be performed on site, preserving the labour-intensive processes that have characterised production since the 19th century.
